Do You Think Aging is a Privilege?

While I am out photo-hunting on the Upper West Side, I always like to stop by Lynn Dell's Off Broadway Boutique. She has the most stylish customers, including the beautiful lady above. This glamorous woman told me that she had seen me on The Today Show and I replied that I would love to take her photograph, but that she seemed way too young. When she told me that she had a 40 year old son, I knew that she fit the bill. I was excited to capture her dazzling style to share with all of you.

When I got back home I reflected on this experience. I know that people are often told that they are too old to model and represent fashion, style and beauty. I wonder how it feels when I tell an older person that they are too young to appear on Advanced Style? Do they take this as a compliment? Is youth the only valued stage of life? 80 year old Joyce always tells me that, " To Age is a Privilege." I don't know about you, but I can't wait to get old.

40? Wow!
Age is really a privilege if it is to appear in Advanced Style. I hope you're still doing this 30 years from now (you'll have assistants then), and i hope they photograph me!

At nearly 51 (the youngest in my family), with all six of my siblings passed as well as my parents; I would definitely say that given the alternative - aging is a definite privilege! ;)

Aging well is even more so.

I think a lot of stylish women in their 60's may not look 'old enough' for your blog

With infertility I've never run with women my age. They had children to tend along with career.

My dear lady friends have always been 60-80. Cannot calculate the richness they've brought into my life.

Ha, now I'm middle-aged and know infertility has been a blessing.

Age is a privilege. And fashion needs more diversity, it should be a reflection of the society we live in.

WE WILL ALL GET OLD (HOPEFULLY). YOUR MODELS, THOUGH, SHOW A DIGNITY THAT IS HARD TO FIND IN MOST MODELS. AND THEIR BEAUTY AND STYLE ARE UNIQUE AND PURE. I WAS AFRAID OF GETTING OLD BEFORE, BUT YOUR WORK HAS HELPED ME A LOT. IT IS INSPIRING

Be careful what you wish for. Enjoy your youth while you have it and don't wish it away.

Age is truly a privilege..there´s just something in older people a kind of mature wisdom and sense of being that pairs amazingly with style.

I think aging is totally a privilege! For fashion, but mostly for life and love experience. My best friend died last year, suddenly and unexpectedly, at 29, from a heart aneurysm. He'll never get to be the dapper older man I always expected him to turn into. I think the older stages of life should totally be valued and appreciated.

But did you ever learn her actually age? Conceivably she could be as young as 53? It's amusing to think that one might be too young for Advanced Style.

Aging well, and retaining your physical and mental faculties is a privilege that not all of us are granted. I hope that I am lucky enough to reach the age where I'm considered "Advanced Style" material!

I would have guess she is in her 40s not that she has a son that is 40!

Age is a privilege if you arrive there healthy and stay healthy - otherwise it can be quite a nuisance!
Of course I admire all your Advanced Style ladies! :-)

Age is indeed a privilege. At the same time, as our current culture stands, I do believe that fashion idealizes youth as the pinnacle of beauty. It would be incredible to see fashion evolve and include a more diverse age, skin and body type. I think you do an brilliant job of showcasing diversity and celebrating each individuals beauty. Its' one of the reasons I like following and supporting you!

we always look for something that we're not, we always want to be someone that we're not.
I think we should just take the best that every age can give us and keep it always in mind.
This though reminds me also the Woody Allen movie "Midnight in Paris", did you see it?
cheers

p.s. I so agree that to age is a privilege but also being a child and behave so.
