Conversation with The Voodoo Cafe

While I'm out shooting for the book today, I thought you'd like to check out my podcast with Rice from the blog Notes From The Voodoo Cafe . We talked about aging, style, and how to approach someone on the street for a photograph. I hope you enjoy our conversation and I look forward to hearing your comments.

Ari,

Thanks for doing this interview and looking forward to Rice's next interview with you.

Glad to hear you're thinking big.

And to my delight I think your focus on 70 and over is a good thing because these wise teachers have become invisible.

Your memories make me think of my own memories with my grandmother. She was fun, kind, generous and sweet with lots of wisdom.

These older people could sure teach young people some good manners, etiquette and life lessons about how to be kind and patient with one another.

Grandmas know how to attend to the "small" things in a child's life which bring the most joy.(like sitting on the bed and clicking your heels before watching TV) I can tell you really miss your Grandma.

I think by the time you reach 70 you can d--n wear what you may please. How dare a society ignore our wisdom keepers and then have the audacity to tell them what to wear.

Thank you for your efforts to carry your message of "hope" for older people on this planet.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that OWN will break out their set age demographic and embrace the "hip" elders.

I was surprised to see Rice here, as I know her more as an arts & crafts teacher. I had the pleasure of taking a class from Rice many years ago at a rubber stamp store here in Lubbock, Texas. Very charming lady! And so knowledgable and patient with us rubber stampers in her class. Rice lives in Midland, TX, which is about 120 miles south of me. If any of you have the chance to take a class from Rice, go for it! She is well worth your time.

You and your blog - and of course the ladies and gentlemen! - are absolute genius.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

The nicest thing that could ever happen to me would be to have you stop me on the street and ask to take my picture. : )

Love,

Barbara

I've been reading your blog for some time, loving the ladies you've featured. I just listened to the podcast, it was great. I recently returned from visiting my 96 year old father in a rehab center after he broke his hip. While there I was actually thinking how cool it would be for you to visit some of the folks there. I saw so many people who were dressed as "old folks"...but I saw a few that were so delightful..a lady with a leopard collar she wore every night to dinner, and a man who wore a suit jacket every day when he went to meals. There was another lady who had hair the color of Ilona's. I always made a point of telling her how great it looked. My own father wears his jeans, boots, vest, and cowboy hat every where he goes, and people always stop him to tell him how neat he looks. A fashion show in a nursing home would just be a lot of fun. Can't wait for your book to come out!
