Gitte Lee : The Art of Personal Style

I am back in London finishing up some projects and I had the honor of meeting with my new friend Gitte Lee again. Gitte is one of the most charming and elegant women I have ever met. She has a great instinct about style and how to enjoy life and she shared some of her secrets with me.

Gitte Lee modeled in London over 50 years ago and now is returning to the fashion spotlight. Expect some exciting things from Gitte in the near future including some of my photos of her and some other fashionable ladies in Time Out London and Stella Magazine. Gitte and I started discussing why as of late older men and women are becoming more in vogue in fashion and advertising .Not only are positive and beautiful images of older men and women who are aging gracefully and living life the to the fullest inspirational, but they give people of all generations something to aspire to . A picture of an elegant older lady in an ad campaign adds an element of history, quality, timelessness, and it tells a story. These images are so powerful because there are very few of them and the more they are put out into the world, the more positively people will respond to them.

Like many of the ladies I feature on Advanced Style Gitte has a unique sense of personal style that perfectly suits her. She has her own timeless and elegant and uniform ready for all occasions . Her outfits are the same for every season, a sweater, long coat, and pair of loose trousers. She wears her signature black glasses and different hats to protect her skin from the sun. The true secret to Gitte's style is that she changes fabrics to suit the season, lighter cotton for the summer, and heavier fabrics during the colder months, but sticks to a simple and clean color palette and structure and accessorizes to suit each outfit. Each beautiful combination is subtly different with the change of a hat or bag and they can be worn day or night in all types of weather.

Gitte was very particular about the way she dressed as a young girl, so she decided to start making her own clothes at the age of nine. I asked her if her style had developed over time, but she told me that she has dressed the same for as long as she can remember. Her signature overcoats were purchased in India and she know longer feels the need to shop as she has everything she needs inside of her closet. We can all take some style cues from Gitte and look out for more of her soon and if you are in London stop by Selfridges Forever Shop to take a look at my photos in person!

She's beautiful and has a nice wardrobe; I'd be interested in what she wear for casual wear and when she is at home or working in a creative type enviornment or even in sports.
Thank you.

Wow. How freeing it must be NOT to worry about the latest syle AND still look great! What an inspiration~

That being said, eventhough I have my own uniform, being an artist, I don't know if I could go THAT far!

Her glasses are amazing. They are Ultra Goliaths. So classic. Never seen it on a woman though. Its what Harry Carey wore! Good work as always!

So elegant. I would dress like her at any age. I find such confidence in people that know what works for them and sticks to it. I like how I can pick out the elements that are her signature: that hat, the brooch pinned on the shoulder, THE GLASSES, and the overall silhouette.

Gitte looks amazing in each of these outfits. Her poise and presence in front of the camera speak to her time as a model, but also show her comfort and ease with herself. It is easy to see how naturally elegant she is. I love the colours she wears.

Gitte is beautiful and timeless. Her look is never out of style and she knows what works for her. We could all take note and simplify our lives and wardrobes like that, instead of jumping from one fad to the next.

This women is already my best friend-I am lusting over her sunnies! Why is it that the older ladies have the classier sunglasses? And I wonder where they get them? I guess I really do need to ask.

I hope I look this fabulous when I'm her age!

Gitte Lee is a beautiful woman with both style and grace. She wears things that are classics, and being simple don't detreact from her face or body.

Impressive that she doesn't feel the need to buy anything else in the way of clothing for the life she leads now.I find that hard to imagine doing.

I'd love to see her with her hat off. I would imagine she is equally lovely.

Her signature style works so marvelously because it accentuates her slender shape and frames her strong features, while being utterly comfortable: loose, fluid fit, low heels, long jacket, large bag, large glasses, simple combinations and palette, no patterns. This 'uniform' adapts easily, I would think, to any situation, be it casual (maybe without hat and brooch) or formal.

I'd love to know which perfume she wears! (Rive Gauche or Opium by YSL, Coco or No. 19 by Chanel, Miss Dior? Perhaps Mitsouko or L'Heure Bleue by Guerlain...).

You've nailed it: "Not only are positive and beautiful images of older men and women who are aging gracefully and living life the to the fullest inspirational, but they give people of all generations something to aspire to . A picture of an elegant older lady in an ad campaign adds an element of history, quality, timelessness, and it tells a story."

Gitte's spectacle frames are so dramatic and flattering. What a beautiful lady - she has really inspired me today! As a woman just a little under forty I find Advanced Style so inspirational - much better than any fashion magazine.

I'd like to know Gitte's take on accessories, especially jewelry. Does she buy new (or new vintage) pieces each season? What are her favorite brands, styles, pieces?

Good lord, I KNEW this woman looked familiar! If I'm not mistaken, she's the wife of actor Sir Christopher Lee. He has some amazing photographs of her in his autobiography. I fell in love with her elegance the first time I saw them.
