Wild Combination

I met this woman on the street after seeing the new documentary about Arthur Russell, "Wild Combination" (I highly recommend it). The thin orange lines in her windowpane pants, her orange sweater, scarf, blush, and even her hair are a wild combination in their own right.

Classic Couple

These two caught my eye with the simple ease of their looks, and what I really love about them is how well their style translates. Transplant them to Scotland, Poland, Arizona, or Chicago and they'd be just as convincing. When I complimented their style, they said "If you only knew how many people have stopped us and told us that over the years!".

Good friend and make up artist Joanna Lily says, "These photos were taken while I was shooting in Chinatown on Mulberry street. The first one, the guy was just walking by as we were shooting, the other lady was standing in an alley watching us work. Note the matching umbrella!"

Koos

Advanced Style maven "Madison Beehive" told us about "Koos", one of her favorite places to shop, so we headed over to check it out. We were lucky to meet Puck, the owner of the shop, who chatted with us for awhile about her older customers and the couture clothing they buy in her shop.

Puck, the owner of Koos, standing in front of her exclusive atelier

The boutique carries exclusive, one of a kind pieces designed by Koos van den Akker - a New York based designer known for designing Dr. Huxtable's sweaters on the Cosby Show in the 80's. Like the sweaters that made him famous, his couture clothing is known for its theme of bright color and pattern combinations. As Puck explained, his clothing is especially popular with older women who have had time to develop their style and look to this exclusive atelier for something special to add to their wardrobes.

For more about Koos and his design inspirations, check out koosnewyork.com, and stop by the shop at 1263 Madison Avenue in New York to see his work. Thank you, Puck, for your help, and thanks to Madison Beehive for telling us about the shop!

Madison Beehive

This woman's striking hair immediately caught my eye - the color and beehive updo look impeccable. Her style is simple peasant and urban chic all wrapped into one, and the straw shopping bag ties everything together. With the flowers in the background, she looks straight out of a Sunday morning European market scene; a good look.

Check out the above post for her shopping advice...

Lauren at Lunch

I was lucky enough to meet Lauren Hutton yesterday on my way to the West Village. She was about to sit down for a meal when I asked if I could have a photo of her. I've always admired the way that she mixes classic and tailored elements and at 64 her status as a style icon is still relevant today. Check Erika's Article for more photos of Hutton.

Reader Submission

We just received these great photos from German actor Alexander Beyer. He promised to send more with some background information about the subjects, but for now we can marvel at the spectacular shots. He did mention that the top photo was taken in Rome 2008 and that the Ferrari belongs to the woman shown in the picture.

Pink Plaid

All pink, all plaid, with white tennis shoes and perfect make-up to match.

Suzanne Golden, Bead Artist

Reader Submission from Flying Saucer

Fellow blogger Selina Jervis of Flying Saucer, from the UK, just sent us this great photo. Thanks, Selina! Check out her website and click here for the story behind her photo.

Put On Your Housecoat

What's so remarkable about this lady is that she makes a pink housecoat and thin floral dress look very chic by adding a few stylish accessories. Her strong presence and confident pose encompass so much of what I love about Advanced Style.

Smile Is Style

This woman has a stunning outfit and makes bold colors look elegant, but my favorite thing about her look is her smile. There are a million quotes about the worth of a smile, but to me this picture says it all.

Nightlife Sensation

At 92, Zelda Kaplan is still partying the night away and enjoying life to the fullest. Kaplan, known for her philanthropist work promoting women's rights in Africa, was recently featured on Blackbook's blog (picture above) featuring some of New York's most famous night owls. Check the video below to learn more about Zelda's life and her wonderful African apparel.

Splash of Color

I met Gloria at the bus stop on the corner of Houston and 6th ave. I really enjoyed how she mixed a more conservative pleated dress with fun accessories, including her shocking pink baseball cap and brightly colored scarf. These playful elements add a little pizazz to her look.

Casually Chic

I am definitely a fan of irreverent and flashy style, but sometimes the most simple outfits makes a person look crisp and clean. This outfit is perfect for a trip to the grocery store and a walk in the park.

Listen To This

I found this great video while looking around on YouTube and found some background information on a site called Time Goes By. Ronni Bennett, the site author, explains:

"A group of about 40 elders, ranging in age from 78 to 99 and calling themselves The Zimmers, have recorded The Who’s tune, My Generation, at the historic Abbey Road studio in London. The video is one of the latest hits on YouTube. Lead singer, 90-year-old Alf Caretta, told the BBC:

“I can't believe this is happening. For me to have recorded a song in the same studio as the Beatles is just so exciting. I feel like the whole experience has brought me back to life. I was stuck in a rut and now I feel alive again.”

Hope you all enjoy!

Sunday Brunch

I caught this woman out of the corner of my eye when I was ordering brunch, and had to ask her for a photo. Although my shot has some pretty bad lens flare, I couldn't keep this one from you. She looked beautiful for a Sunday afternoon, and made my brunch even better.

Style Inspiration

I definitely find eccentric fashion very interesting, especially coming from the Advanced Style set. Thanks to Style.com and Blog polkadots-vodkashots for introducing me to Anna Piaggi, stylel writer for Italian Vogue and good friend of Karl Lagerfeld.

Stylish Sitter

I saw this guy on my way to meet up with a friend for lunch. I am always drawn in by people's hats and this fellow had a particularly beautiful one. If you take a look closer you can also see his heart printed suspenders. His wife asked me why I was taking his picture and I responded, " How could I not when he looks this good." He also told me that he has much better hats at home.Hopefully I'll catch him again with one of his grander head adornments.

Rita from Roma

Rita looked stunning walking down Park Avenue this evening with her friends. Her feminine skirt and blazer look great with her booties, oversize hat, and golden accessories. All the way from Roma!

American Portrait

When we told this couple how great they look together, the gentleman replied, "Well, we've only been married for 58 years!". He also told us that "it's all a matter of choosing your grandparents carefully". They are an adorable pair, and wear those 58 years very well.

Mia Berner

Click Here for more information about "the lady in red" originally posted on September 4th. Hanneli was kind enough to share some additional information about writer, Mia Berner. Check below to watch a video of this amazing woman, unfortunately I couldn't find a video in English, but it will give you a good look into her great style.

Red Squares

What first drew me to this lady were her over sized green sunglasses and chic pinstriped pantsuit. When I looked more closely, I noticed two red squares stitched onto the right cuff of her pants. She was in a hurry to catch the bus, so I never did find out about the mysterious red symbols, but they definitely add some unique design to her look.

Thank You!

Lately, Advanced Style has been getting some great attention from other websites. Many new readers have found our site because of this. We'd like to say "Thanks!" and show our readers some of the articles that have been written about us...

Thanks for mentioning us, guys!

Sincerely,
Advanced Style

Lucy

When we met Lucy, she was enjoying a conversation with friends on a park bench. When asked for her photo, she told us that it wasn't a problem; she gets asked for her photo all the time. Her only request was that we send a hard copy. When I asked about her style inspirations, she said she just wears what she wants to wear, she's not trying to follow any kind of fashion or style. Trying or not, she hits the mark.

Music Lady

Oftentimes Briana and I will see someone from afar and know that we just have to go up and talk to them. A big part of what we seek to do with this site is to expose the public to some of the city's hidden treasures. This woman is a piano teacher and she harmoniously plays different colors and patterns against each other. Her yellow headband is what really stood out to me, but once she started talking her awesome personality quickly stole the show.

Irene Williams: Queen of Lincoln Road

I was very excited when my friend Dusty told me about an incredible short film he thought I would love called, Irene Williams: Queen of Lincoln Road. In the short Eric Smith, a New yorker vacationing in South Beach, meets Irene Williams whose colorful handmade outfits immediately catch his eye. After approaching her and spending some time asking about her designs, they become quick friends. This friendship lasted nine years and many of their special moments, including a trip to the mall, going out to to tea and visiting Irene's hat filled apartment are captured on film.

I was extremely impressed with Irene's creative expression and the importance that her personal style played in her life.Look below for a clip from the movie and for more information check out the official website.

Bow Ties and Buttons

You may have noticed from photos of Ari that he is a big fan of bow ties. The paisley one, above, really works for this man. The broccoli pins on his lapels also make this a very special look (on the right is a broccoli floret with a face, and on the left, his pin states "Listen to Your Mom, Eat Your Vegetables"). Add well-groomed 'stache, ear-piercings, and hat, and you've got style.

Devilishly Chic

What do you call a union between a Tasmanian man and a French woman? Devilishly Chic. I was close to calling it a day as dusk fell on Union Square, when this magical couple floated by. I couldn't resist a photo and a chat with this interesting pair.

They both taught at CUNY for many years. She, being from France, taught French culture and literature. He is originally Tasmanian and taught botany there. As a sometime freelance writer, he could relate to my love of photography and writing, and advised me on the perils of such a career. Afterwards, he referred me to his website: spicesfiji.com.

Turns out, he is quite an accomplished man. Dr. Ronald Gatty, or "The Spice Man", is the father of Fiji's spice industry! He has a terrific personal history that you can check out on his website [click here], including his time spent exploring the south seas for medicinal plants, and that he's the son of the first man to fly an aeroplane around the world. So cool!

Gatty invented the original Spice Girls - the young ladies who hand-pollinate vanilla bean flowers in Fiji (above)

One last observation: You know those hip headbands that have come back in style lately? Look close. I'm pretty sure she pioneered that trend.

Braids

I saw this lady on the bus this morning and thought she looked really unique. Her braids and baseball cap give her a look all her own. She also colorfully mixes floral patterns to create a canvas of cool. Sorry for the poor picture quality, but I had to snap her with my phone.

More International Style

I was blogging around the world again tonight and this is what I found. The man on top has some sort of amazing crystal on his hat. Thanks to To-Vie for these wonderful shots.

Grandpa & Grandson

I love Central Park. I love walking there, relaxing on the benches, and people watching, and glimpses of style like this are what made my day there yesterday. There's nothing sweeter than a Grandpa watching over his grandson in the park, and his shoes and cane are a great frame for his refined personal style.

Central Park Fashionistas

These ladies' advanced style was unmistakeable, even from several yards away. The sun was flashing on their hats through the trees as they floated through Central Park when I finally caught up with them. I'm really into their matching silhouettes, and their quirky pooch makes me smile each time I see this pic.

Fair Lady

Olivia and I thought this lady had a great look. She mixes warm colors and patterns and has the accessories to match.I've been a huge fan of flowered hats since the day that I first saw My Fair Lady, with my grandma.

Reader Submission

New York make up artist, Joanna Lily, submitted this photo from a trip to Istanbul. These men were chatting outside of Topkapi Palace one summer evening and she was inspired to take their photo. I'm a big fan of plaid shirts and these fellows make them look great paired with a vest and hat.

Sunday Paper

This gentleman was enjoying a wonderful tradition of reading his Sunday paper in Central Park. He was nice enough to take a quick photo break, but didn't have much time to chat in between scanning the headlines. Luckily, his style doesn't need much explaining.

Beautiful Coat, Hot Day

When I approached this lady about her wonderful look she told me that she was 75 and that she hoped I would tell young people to dress nicely. Briana and I asked her a few questions about her style inspiration and she answered, "I don't go by style, I go by what's comfortable and what looks good on me. Young people ask me where I got my coat and I tell them its 100 yrs old, all my clothes are from the 70s!"

It would be awesome to see today's youth all dressed up like this, in fact I'll have to go out and buy a new suit and hat!

Tiffany's

I spotted this lady from across the square and knew she would be perfect for the site. Her beautiful hat was laying near her, so I asked if she might put it on for a photo. She let me know that she was from Munich and that her hat was a present from Tiffany's. She looks so charming with her patterned yellow scarf and lovely outfit.

Reader Submission (Rachel's Grandpas)

We are very excited to have received our first few reader submitted photos. Rachel Wianecki from Seattle sent us some pictures of her stylish grandpas.

She said that, "Bob(seen above) is way into is seasonal garb (frowns upon those who wear dark colors in the summer time). He has an extensive hat collection (100's of hats) and at 90 years old still dresses it up everyday to look good for the ladies.

He looks great in his matching shirt and suspenders!

Rachel also let us know that, "Eddie LOVES his pantsuit big time and wears it almost everyday."

One of the things that is so interesting about advanced style is the consistency and confidence that comes with a developed fashion sense. Many of the people I have talked to have worn the same coat for 25 years or have had their favorite hat "forever". These pieces hold special memories for their owners and often times look better than contemporary ones.

Patterns

I met this fab lady on the Upper West Side this afternoon. Her boldy patterned dress caught my eye, but her purse, sweet hairstyle, and beautiful smile complete the look. When I asked where she bought her dress, she said she got it twenty years ago and couldn't remember where. Adorable.

Aviator Twins

On my way home last night, I saw these guys posted on the sidewalk, taking a cigar break in front of their Psychic Readings storefront. They each have their own distinctive style, but when you get a little closer and notice their matching aviator glasses, their charm comes into full effect. They offered me a psychic reading after getting their photo taken... I couldn't take them up on their offer, but I hope that there are more photos as good as these in my future.

Blue Lashes

I caught this lovely lady before the rain hit this morning in the West Village. She was a vision in blue. When I asked to take her photo she told me that the older she gets, the more people want to take her picture. Check out her incredible eyelash design in the detail below, it is truly a work of art.

A Well-Sculpted Look

I met Nancy, a sculptor, in the East Village. Her look is subtle but her layers are rad. When I asked about her silky brown pants, she explained that they are traditional Indian pants that she bought on a trip to India 25 years ago. She just started wearing them again and they are the perfect finishing touch to this look.

Check out her site, www.nancyazara.com. If you're in New York, check out her "Heart Wall" sculpture installation at 340 Madison Avenue.

Custom Glasses

I saw this lady chatting with her friend on the corner and immediately noticed her great glasses. She told me that she had them custom made and that they get a lot of attention. I think she looks wonderful in her colorful skirt and scarf, but she let me know that if I make fun of her she would hunt me down.

Great Accessories

Part of personal style is having great accessories, and the proof is in the pudding with Christine and Andrew, below.

The hat. The necklace. The lacy shrug over her long black dress. Need I go on? Christine's jewelry was especially striking, so here's a close-up for some inspiration when you head out to buy your next piece of bling.

Andrew's got an unconventional mix of accessories here. His red beret and scarf, studded cuffs, and panda bear necklace are all eye-catching personal touches.

All Tucked In

This guy's style is all his own. His round glasses with neon orange accents and groovy t-shirt definitely give him rad dude appeal. The way he tucks his casual chinos into oversized red gym socks adds some character to the overall look.

Cool Cat, Hot Dog

On my first day out with Ari, we were lucky enough to meet George Riddle. I love his old-timey style, his beautiful dog, and rose-colored aviators, but the real secret to George's success is his cool confidence. You can tell that this guy has refined his personal style and is truly comfortable in his own skin.

Check out George Riddle's Website and Video ...

Gorgeous Green

My pal Briana just arrived in town just in time to help me spruce up the blog. We went out looking for stylish folks together and found some true gems. This lady looks so elegant with her carefully pulled back hair and gorgeous green jacket over her floral dress. Her crystal necklaces shine almost as bright as her wonderful smile. Expect some more great pictures and posts from Briana.

Radclyffe Hall's Rad Style

These photos are of English author Radclyffe Hall. Her impeccable mix of men's tailoring with feminine accents was both very controversial and way ahead of its time.

Snow White (Hanneli Mustaparta Strikes Again)

My fellow-blogging friend, Hanneli, got another great shot that I have to borrow from her site.
She has a knack for finding stylish people dressed in monochromatic outfits. I love how this woman's hair matches her clothes. She looks so clean and elegant.
Hanneli also shot a pic of me on her blog.

Tangled up in Blue

I ran into this lady at Beacon's Closet in Williamsburg. What struck me about her was her cool accessories and the way she worked them into her outfit. Her fresh blue-tinted shades, turquoise earrings, and baby-blue head wrap, mixed together, make for an eclectic look that mixes rad 90s style with hippie chic. Her butterfly fanny pack and flowered shirt also conjure up images of 90's trends seen on television including My So-Called Life (see picture of irreverently stylish character Rayanne below) and Clarissa Explains it All.

A Futuristic Look at Advanced Style

I've known this classy broad for several years now and her style still never ceases to amaze. Her willingness to confidently mix colors, metallics and textures without trying too hard is truly inspiring. Here, she coordinates a turquoise ruffled top with blue metallic printed shorts, a hand beaded seahorse necklace and ribboned silk ballet flats. The coup de gras is a transparent floppy top hat. The result is something that resembles a bohemian wedding in the future. I love it - she is truly beyond her time.

They're Catching On!

Check out this awesome article about the inclusion of male models over 60 on the Spring 09 runways:Also, great thanks to Blackbird and Refinery 29 for mentioning us on their sites. They are two of our favorite sources of fashion information.

Feather in The Cap

This guy was a great model and his outfit is exactly what we strive to capture here on Advanced Style. His unique hat and flip-up shades add unpredictable character to the otherwise classic look. When I inquired about his straw hat he told me that everybody loved it and that he bought it in Colorado several years ago. He is both comfortable and confident in his style, a comfort that often comes with maturity. See below for a closer view of his hat and glasses.

Floral Fun

I stopped this lady because I thought she looked quite charming in her flower dress. She told me that people had been stopping her all day inquiring about her outfit and that she didn't know what all the fuss was about. We talked for a while about style and politics and then bid each other adieu.

Me and Mimi

I had the pleasure of working with the incomparable Mimi Weddell at the Lorick fashion show last night. When I picked her up she was wearing an over-sized tuxedo shirt, black leggings, and vintage Chanel shoes. Her look is both theatrical and super modern with a mix of classic details and exaggerated proportions. She is definitely a style inspiration for me and I look forward to spending more time with her in the future.

Mix and Match

I snapped this photo at the Balducci's grocery store on 14th. I'm a big fan of mixing various patterns and I like how this woman ties her outfit together by incorporating the colors from her shorts and shirt into her shoes and socks. She is a joy to look at.

Blog Talk

Today was a very exciting day. I met fellow fashion blogger Hanneli in front of the Marc Jacobs store. Hanneli, pictured above, and I shared blogging tips and scouted out snap-worthy people together. She also shared an amazing find from her own blog-- see below.

Hanneli told me that the woman above, Mia Berner, is a famous Scandinavian writer and that she is always dressed fully in red. I will have to get some more information about her because I find her style fascinating.

Advanced Models

I noticed this video while perusing YouTube, and it made me think about two of my favorite older models.

Carmen Dell'Orefice is 76 has been modeling for over 60 years. She appeared on her first Vogue cover at the age of 15 and has been modeling since she was 12 years old. Here are some examples of her developing beauty.

...and in a more recent ad:

Mimi Weddell, 93,who I just had the pleasure of meeting with, has already been featured below for her wonderful film Hats Off.

Both of these women are perfect examples of advancing style and grace. They are inspirational.

RIP Riitta

Lovely Finnish designer Riitta Immonen, founder of Marimekko, has passed on. Her patterns were impeccably Scandinavian.

Here is her obituary in the New York Times today:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/02/arts/design/02immonen.html?ref=style

Shopper's Delight

I snapped this photo in the Goodwill thrift store on the Upper East Side. I stopped this beautiful lady because of her elegant, pulled-back hair and stylish and fun outfit. If you look closer you can see little mythic creatures dancing around on her skirt. I also love the big dramatic collar on her blouse. We spoke for a while about her experience in New York teaching children. She had so much grace and charm and seemed to know everyone in the store. I hope to run into her again.

A Win for Lynn

I ran into Lynn Yaeger, fashion writer for the Village Voice, on my way to MoMA. She inspires me to stay original and creative with my own style. Lynn mixes 20's glamour with modern clothes and accessories to create a completely unique look.

Pretty in Pink

This stylish woman was very interested in knowing what my blog was all about. I let her know that I was documenting mature, stylish street wear and that her look had caught my eye. The splash of shocking pink has a great effect over this simple dress. I also think that the tip of her hat and her over sized sunglasses add glamour to her overall appearance.
Posted by Picasa

"Smile or No Smile?"

Often when I stop someone on the street for a photo they ask me if they should a smile or not. I let them know that it's really up to them and that I want to capture a little bit of their style and character. This woman knows how to make an impression with her elegantly draped scarf and eye-catching accessories over a black backdrop.

Candid Camera Phone pt.2

Once again I ran out of the house without my camera and had to rely on my phone for taking pictures. This lady was sitting on a bench a few blocks away from my house and my roommate noticed her awesome neon sunglasses from afar.

In the last few years there's been a resurgence of 80's and 90's fashion trends. Sporting a cool contrast with her casual floral dress, this lady looks great in her radical shades!
