Keeping An Eye On Spring Street

It seems that every neighborhood has that one lady(or group of) who keeps a watchful eye over the block. She can be spotted chatting around the front door of an apartment building, all the while not missing a thing that is happening in the surrounding area. She is the go to person for any neighborhood gossip and once you earn her trust she will always provide you with a warm smile and hello.

Every time I pass these two ladies in their awesome sweaters, I get a sense that they are looking after their community. Like stylish watchmen, their uniforms various combinations of colorful sweaters and dark slacks they exchange laughs while peering around to view the local happenings . I must also admit that I totally dig over sized vintage patterned sweaters. I love to search through the ladies department at thrift stores looking for sweaters. They always have the best designs and colors.

My particular neighborhood watch keeper always wears her hair wrapped up in a simple and elegant scarf, with a long pleated skirt and short sleeved shirt. She is stylish because her style is unique and personal and you can tell that she has been consistently wearing various takes on this "uniform" for many years. This outfit has come to express her strength and character, her consistency and reliability. I have asked her a few times for a photo, but she just laughs and waves me away. She is outside every morning with a days greeting and I always feel a little more comfortable knowing she's around when I come home late at night.
Do you guys have ladies like this in your own neighborhoods? I'd love to hear your responses and if you have photos even better!

Colorful Inspiration In The New Museum

This woman was a joy to photograph. She was visiting The New Museum with some friends and I took my break from work to go and talk to her. Not only is her colorful mix of patterns inspiring but her wonderful attitude as well. She told me that she loves living in New York because of how culturally and ethnically diverse it is. I talk to a lot of people about their experiences in New York and one of the things that I hear most is that the city keeps people feeling alive and vibrant, that life happens on the street and that living in New York forces people to be culturally aware and active. Its a great town for young and old alike!

Advanced Style: Future Options

On the topic of aging and style, it is my opinion that style options become less limited with age. With the benefit of time and having seen trends come and go throughout the years, Advanced Style fashionistas know what works best for them and they can take risks without fear of judgement. Arriving at this venerable state grants one the priveledge of authority . It is to our elders that we should turn to for advice. In fact the silver haired set can be free to dress for themselves, wear their clothes with confidence and experiment with their favorite style cues from the past and present.
The woman above takes a practical accessory, and turns it into a contemporary and elegant fashion statement. By mixing her glasses with fun earrings, a beautiful floral hair tie, chic black jacket, and trendy boots, she creates a look that is fashion forward and super stylish. It is this mixing of elements, seemingly effortless and spontaneous, but put together with great instinct and care that I find so fascinating in my investigation of advanced styles. The advancement of personal style is about feeling good which in turn allows you to look even better, the only one you have to convince is yourself.

An Inspiring Day With Debra pt. 2

There is too much to write about my new friend Debra at this hour, but I promise to provide some background to these photos at a later date. For now enjoy these photos of her wonderful apartment and fantastic works of art. As always feel free to share your own Advanced Style inspiration and email me at Advancedstyleinfo@gmail.com.

Almost Famous

These two were so happy that I stopped them for a photo that they told me they felt like movie stars. They said that they had been photographed when they were much younger on a ferry boat and had mistaken for being famous back then. I love how they both are wearing tinted lenses and thought they looked practical and stylish for a day on the town.

Respect Your Elders

As I kid, when I would get frustrated with something an adult said or did my grandmother would always say to me, "Honey, you must respect your elders." Although I couldn't quite understand having more respect for someone just because they were older, she didn't say it in a commanding way, in fact I think the addition of the word honey made it sound sweet and definitely something I could accomplish. The reason I have so much respect for older people is my close relationship with this wonderful woman. She would teach me , " a little bit about a lot of things," something she would say when I told her that I thought she knew everything. At this point I don't even question my respect and admiration for older people. I embrace it and use this blog as a forum to show how cool and relevant we can be in our advancing years. Respect your elders has taken on a new meaning and extending beyond manners to a true appreciation of the beauty, creativity, style and vitality that remains alive and advances as we age.

Leopard Print

I saw this stunning lady at the New Museum and asked if I could take her picture outside. She reminds me of a glamorous movie star in her leopard print glasses and head scarf. Check out some more examples of how to wear leopard print below:

Advanced Style in Cologne

I'm always excited to find examples of advanced style on other people's blogs. My pal MISTER MORT's blog led me to a street style site out of Cologne called Anders-Anziehen, run by costume designer Sandra Smilla Dankert. Smilla presents a diverse group of ages and styles and I was particularly drawn to her awesome selection of Advanced Style. I asked if she would share these photos with us.She happily agreed and gave some great insight into these wonderful photos below:

"I asked the woman with the flowers and the hat for whom the beautiful flowers were for , and she told me ;" For myself... for the nice things in life you have an own responsibility, I think...so..." that's what she said. :-)"

"The other women ,in the blue dress, with flowers; she couldn't believe that I want to take a picture of her, she was highly surprised. She told me that she found the flowers in some garbage box on the street a minute ago, they stuck in it like a decoration. She was a very fine lady, seems to be not too rich, and spending all her money for her 4 children and about 8 or 9 grandchildren. She admired that I am a tailor and a costume designer- she was really interested in my blog project- very openhearted. She would have loved to be a Tailor as well, and then she smiled and said- "well- with 4 children you more or less just become a tailor in a way."

"I met the early bird guy this morning, around 8 , he came home from shopping. It took me a while to explain the difference between Internet and newspapers-he thought I was from the newspapers. He first was very skeptical, but somehow my great mood just reached him in a way,and he smiled- and said OK- take your picture. To be dressed well is very important to him."

"The older lady with the walking-help with the walking cart she was so great! She is 97 years old. She told me that she came to cologne in the age of 25.She was married to a fabricator of clothes, they had money, and she ran around in very chic and stylish clothes. She loved to be dressed exquisite..and special."

Thanks for sharing your gorgeous photos!

A Day With Doris

A Hollywood Moment, Doris as a child Vintage MarimekkoDancing in her garden as a young girl
I feel so lucky to live in New York and have the opportunity to meet such amazing and inspiring people. The other day I was invited to have lunch with two special ladies, Mary and Doris. Doris invited us back to her home for coffee and stories after giving us a architectural tour of her neighborhood. Mary had mentioned that Doris had exquisite taste and I could definitely gather as much, but was nonetheless taken aback by her stunning apartment and magnificent flair for design.

Everything in Doris' apartment is artfully arranged with her special touch. Its a world where neoclassical and contemporary design elements blend harmoniously with whimsical charm. Miniature chairs sit beside precious antiques and vintage family photos. Fine art pieces are mixed with wonderful drawings and paintings done by artist friends. These works hang on the walls of a place that her boss once remarked, "Where do you think you are, Versailles?" after she mentioned the idea of installing big mirrors in the living room.Doris' apartment is a reflection of herself, charming and graceful, contemporary and intelligent.

Doris is a natural teacher, storyteller and design wiz. She worked at the Whitney for over 30 years in charge of all museum publications. As we toured her apartment she espoused upon plants, old movie stars, furniture and fashion design and we discovered that we both were born without defined ankles. My grandmother was a librarian and I always thought she knew everything. There wasn't a question she couldn't answer. She used to say, " I know a little bit about a lot of things", but truthfully she knew a lot about most things. Doris is the same way, an expert, ready and willing to share her treasures, her knowledge. I learned that she pretends not to love chocolate although she really does and that you can transform old bricks into ancient treasures by placing them upon a beautiful antique dresser. I could go on and on, but hopefully these photos will give you a little peek into her magical world!

Striking A Pose

This lady might have learned to strike a confident pose from her days doing PR for photographer Helmut Newton. Her groovy style thoroughly expresses her fun and creative spirit.

Recent Reader Submissions

I want to share a selection of some of the most recent reader submissions to Advanced Style. I always love when people send me photos they have taken and find it very insightful to look at what others find appealing and inspiring.

The black and white photo is from a collection by artist Rokas Darulis. It is being featured in Murdock barbershop in London and they thought that we would enjoy it as well. As a traditional barbershop, they service many older clients, who come in for old fashioned wet-shave, moustache trim, and beard reshapes.

The photo of the lovely couple was taken by New Yorker Ben Monnie while on a trip to Cape Cod. He explains, "She smelled amazing with perfume, he only likes to look at photos of himself as a young man. They wanted to know if the blog was for girls or boys.We were in downtown Welfleet, Cape Cod, MA in the parking lot next to Hatch's fish market and the town hall.

Marie Lindström sent me the photo of a grand older gentleman in a hat, sweater vest and coat from her recent European travels.

Kam Martin sent me this photo of a stylish fellow in Seattle. Check out her style profile of him HERE.

The last photo was taken by T.W. Li of Mimi, from a party in Chicago.

Keep the photos coming and feel free to add some to the Advanced Style Facebook page!

Cents of Humor

This charming fellow was walking on Madison Ave when my friend Jill and I stopped him for a few shots. With a smile on his face, he told us that they would cost 15 cents a piece and later he jokingly remarked that we owed him $1.25. Not only does he have great style, but a wonderful sense of humor as well.

An Advanced Friendship pt.2

Artist and designer Carole Randall has been on the blog several times already and I never get enough of her 1940's hair and makeup. She came by The New Museum the other day with a good friend and was nice enough to pose for a few shots.

It's All In The Details

I saw Susan on my way to work and admired her exquisite style. She told me that her favorite thing to do in the morning is pick out her socks. What a wonderful layering of socks and tights she has paired with her leopard print shoes. We chatted for a minute about "Advanced Style" and how she was wearing "15 years worth of clothing". Susan's eye for design extends beyond fashion. She is the owner of an event design company that creates extraordinary experiences!

Red

When I stopped this lady for a photo she told me that she used to work with the photographer Helmut Newton. She was in a hurry so unfortunately I had to take a few quick snaps without getting to know more of her story. With her bold and colorful style I can only imagine the wonderful projects they must have completed together.

A Mary Afternoon

Mary, one of my favorite stylish ladies about town, invited me over to her apartment for pastries and tortellini salad. I was honored to spend the afternoon with her looking over her collections of vintage beaded bags, tributes to the 1939 World's Fair(an obsession of hers) and various other wonderful bits of the past. Mary is admittedly passionate about fashion. She loves dressing up in different coordinated outfits everyday.

In 1961 Mary moved to New York from Los Angeles. After working various jobs including one at the Whitney where she was fired for insubordination, she opened up a vintage store in Soho. I asked her what her favorite thing about living in the city was and she replied, " I just love walking around New York. The world changes every 3 blocks." Mary has a great love for vintage and antique items, especially memorabilia from the 1939 World's Fair held in New York City. She was born the same year as the fair and is seen in a few of the photos above wearing one of the ticket takers uniforms. She let me know that, " items from the 70's are not vintage" and that the most important thing about New York is the street life, walking around and seeing new things.

Mary shared some wonderful stories and after a quick change into something more "modern" we headed out for a little walk and a trip to Venieros. Check out some of Mary's New York favorites below:

Mary's Manhattan
1. Venieros is one of the best Italian bakeries. It has been around since 1894 and is a great place to grab a cookie and late night coffee( I can attest to this as she bought me a whole box of delicious carrot cake and rugelach).
2. Sitting in Rockefeller center a major part of the Art Deco period.
3.Taking the M9 bus from Ave B crosstown. Its a cheap mini tour of Lower Manhattan.
4. Visiting the Cloisters on a beautiful afternoon.
5. Visiting The Ukrainian National Home in the east village.

Pensively Punk Rock

I found this woman's style an interesting mix of modern sophistication with aesthetic elements of punk rock . Her round tortoise shell glasses paired with a simple and elegant cape creates a clean and understated visage. She appears youthful with her shaggy mo hawk and tapered jeans worn with red Dr. Martens, and still retains an overall refined and distinguished appearance. She wears the look with confidence, heightened by her pensive gaze.

In Memory of Mimi Weddell

My dear friend Mimi Weddell passed away last week at the age of 94.She was a great inspiration to me and I will cherish my memories of her. I first met Mimi at a screening for the documentary Hat's Off, in San Diego. This was just about a year and a half ago, just as I was planning to move to New York. Seeing Mimi living with so much grace and elegance, walking around in her grand hats and wonderful costumes, made the idea of moving to New York even more exciting. I looked at Mimi with awe, mesmerized by her exquisite taste and witty remarks. I told her and "Hat's Off" film maker Jyll Johnstone, that I would look them up when I moved to the city and help spread the word about her wonderful documentary.

I moved to New York in May of last year and began to work and intern for several fashion designers and showrooms, including Abgail Lorick. When I showed Abigail a clip of Mimi speaking about the importance of illusion, she was immediately struck by this profound and kindred spirit. We knew we had to get Mimi to appear in Lorick's upcoming fashion week presentation, and it was my mission to do so. This was my great opportunity to call Mimi on the phone. I looked her up in the yellow pages, dialed her number, and to my great surprise, that wonderful almost aristocratic voice called out from an answering machine, " This is Mimi Weddell, please leave a message and I will call you back." Mimi had been receiving a lot of phone calls for work and was very selective about who she called back. After a few days with no response and several emails to Jyll Johnstone, I was put into contact with Mimi. I met her at her at her apartment uptown. Her place was filled from floor to ceiling with glorious hats. There were books and paintings, and newspaper clippings in every nook and cranny. Sayings like "Rise above it" were neatly scribbled on scraps of paper, stuck to the refrigerator. I entered the apartment with as much wonder and excitement as I would a cave full of crystals or an Egyptian tomb. Mimi, cigarette in hand, offered me Brandy and cookies.

Mimi was a fantastic storyteller . She would animate her tales with glorious glances and expressive hand motions, almost as if she was performing a grand part in a Broadway play. The world truly was her stage. After appearing in Abigail's presentation and stealing the show, I began to receive inquiries into who this fabulous older woman was. Mimi appeared in major print ads for Burberry, Juicy Couture and Louis Vuitton, and had several small acting roles in shows and films including Sex and The City and Hitch, but was never fully recognized for her outstanding talent as a serious actress and performer. To me she was an icon, both for her style and her inherent wisdom and elegance.

Mimi and I got together several more times over last year. I planned a hat party for the release of Hat's Off to DVD and organized some photo shoots and interviews for foreign press interested in Mimi's wonderful style and vibrant character. Just a few weeks ago I sat with Mimi at a nursing home. She was as beautiful and sharp as ever. She always encouraged me to be creative and told me that I could do great things. Mimi was one of the first people I met in New York and she will remain a cherished part of my memories. Her strength and determination had a profound impact on how I look at life. I feel extremely honored to have spent time and worked with such an incredible woman.

Love and Strength to her family.
